Your Duty Today—and Every Day

November 4, 2008
Today we as Americans have the privilege to freely cast our vote for the next President of the United States of America. Freedom is the cornerstone of this country—it is what our founding fathers fought to give us. Freedom to speak freely and worship God without fear makes America the greatest nation in the world. However, our privilege to vote pales in comparison to our privilege—and duty—to pray.

Whoever is the next President of this great nation will face some of the toughest obstacles the leader of the free world has ever come up against. This person will be in charge of our brave men and women overseas who are fighting for freedom in areas where fear, captivity and torture were once the norm. The next leader of the United States of America will impact legislation on the issue of life (for more information, I urge you to click here, and then again here.) Frankly, the 44th President of the United States will either help align us closer to Biblical principles, or farther away.

That is why it is imperative that we be praying for both John McCain and Barack Obama today, tomorrow, and then for the rest of the election winner's presidency. This is our privilege as Americans. This is our duty as Christians.

If you want specific ideas on how to be praying, visit PresidentialPrayerTeam.org. They will not only suggest ways to pray for the two candidates, but will give you insight on how to pray for President Bush as he ends his final term in office. They even provide ideas on how to specifically pray for our troops and their families.

If you are feeling nervous about the election's outcome, I want to encourage you. This sign has hung in my home for over 16 years:
God is sovereign. He has us where we are for His glory and our good.

God is indeed sovereign. He has known since the creation of the world who will be our next President. He determined when and where we would live, all so people might seek Him.
Acts 17:26-27
26From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

I'm sure you've already been urged to vote—and I hope you will. But I would like to urge you to do one more thing today and every day:
1 Timothy 2:1-3
1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior

Holy God,
We declare our allegiance to You above all else. Your name is the holiest in all the earth. You are good, and what You do is good (Ps. 119:68). We ask that Your will would be done in this election. Please forgive us for not speaking to You more about the direction in which our country is moving. Help us to do our part in moving it towards Biblical principles. Thank You for the freedom we enjoy, and make us bold in speaking to others about You.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen

You say it all really clearly here! God is sovereign! May we pray His will be done and He be glorified through our leaders and our country!

Prayers are powerful, and yours spoke straight from your heart. Let's continue to pray for our leaders, for the new President and for our country.

Many sweet blessings!
