Hope

Owen Wilson, successful actor, producer and writer, reportedly cut his wrist and overdosed on drugs yesterday. How could someone who has experienced so much success be inclined (allegedly) to harm themselves - potentially to the point of death?

We all long to be filled with peace and purpose. I live a blessed life but sometimes I become saddened almost to the point of sickness over circumstances in my life. I have personally experienced the words of Proverbs 13:12, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick."

What is your hope in today? If the object of your hope is in this world, at some level you'll realize that it just won't satisfy. More food, more money, more things, more success, more relationships -- all of these are nice and we should enjoy them but we can't make them our reason for living, our hope.

Throughout the Psalms we are encouraged to put our hope in God. Unlike the things of this world, God never changes. Hebrews 13:6 tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. He is the only secure place for us to put our hope.

Maybe Owen needed to experience a little hope in his life. Maybe you need to feel a little hope in your own life today.

Dear Lord,
Thank You for loving me and for asking me to put my hope in You instead of in things that don't last. Thank You for never changing and for always loving me. Please help me experience Your peace and joy as I trust You to be my hope. Let me see tangible examples of Your trustworthiness today.
